11 Jul 2020, 15:30

Hello,
any recommendations/limitations about what HDD to buy for MODE on saturn?
Could I buy internal/external hdd? What size is enough for full Saturn collection?

As the Saturn doesn't have active cooling, we tend to recommend SSDs. That being said the full redump collection is a little over 1Tb. There are lots of duplicates in that set though so with a little trimming you can get everything unique.

I have a Samsung Evo 860 1TB. I played for 3 hours yesterday and the SSD was very hot to touch. Hopefully that's not a issue?

I've noticed this as well and bought a small usb fan to place over the gap where the cd drive used to be to cool the system. It sucks to have the cd lid open all the time but it does the job.

I do have a very thin 500gb HDD at 7200 RPM. It's safe to say it will fit between the disc tray and lid via USB, is anybody using a similar setup? I'd use extra power wires, Haven't decided whether to install on the 20 or 21 pin saturn and I assume that's irrelevant anyway.

I'm happy to use the suggested methods including SSD, Just putting it out there as an option.

I have two MODEs. One in a Dreamcast and one in a Saturn.

In both I'm using a 2TB Seagate FireCuda 2.5" SATA HDD. In the Saturn I'm using the cable for external power.

Both consoles are working well.

this is just my 2 cents but I can't imagine a spinning HDD is ideal, since both the Saturn and Dreamcast will likely be hard power cycled quite often, no?
