Graphical artifacts when using Mega SG

10 Sep 2019, 03:55

I only noted this in the last Mega SD firmware update, the one from yesterday. It happens mostly at the Sega logo after pressing start on Sega CD, tried different BIOS and all get the same artifacts, like pixels changing colors very fast. Tried now on my real hardware Japanese Mega Drive and it’s perfect. Can you please investigate it?

Are you using the latest Mega Sg firmware?

Yes, latest SG jailbreak firmware.

Strange... when I put the Mega SD back to the SG, the artifacts were gone. Tested three ISOS, all clean. Before I tested my real MD hardware I reseated the Mega SD cart a few times to be sure it’s not a contact issue. I have no idea what’s happening here, I can not reproduce the problem at this time, will keep testing.

It’s artifacting again, this time I kept it running for about 1 hour and when I rebooted the game, the artifacts do came back. Do I have a defective product? Never seen complaints about this issue before. I have all updated here. Video below.

Edit: It’s happening in Mega Drive games too, mostly at SEGA logo.

Sorry about the video quality, but it’s very clear in real life, sometimes it gets worse, maybe my Mega SD is overheating?

I watched your video, which by the way might be more effective in landscape instead of portrait. I don't see anything. Keep in mind, the MegaSD does not produce video. The console does. What kind of artifacts are you referring to?

There seem to be little glitchy pixels (I think I saw some light blue coloured pixel sparks in the SEGA logo dark blue), but that's not generated by megasd, it's generated by the console VDP, so it might be some power issue, or maybe HDMI cable problem?

I will try uploading a new video soon in landscape mode, sorry about that.

Are you using the original Analogue PSU with the console?

I saw a post a while back from someone experiencing similar issues and I believe the psu was at fault.

Exactly, it happens mostly at the SEGA logo in every game CD or not. I can see some in game too during certain layers.

I’m testing the Mega SG now without the Mega SD and no artifacts yet. That’s because I think it’s a Mega SD issue.

Yes, original Analogue power adapter and original Analogue HDMI cable. Testing it now without the Mega SD and it’s clean so far. Almost 2 hours testing and counting.
