Settings for OSSC + 32X and OSSC + PSP go

16 Jan 2020, 15:47

Anyone have any advice (or timings) for setting these 2 systems up with the OSSC? JunkerHQ has basically nothing for PSP and absolutely nothing for 32X, and FirebrandX has nothing for either of them, although his Genesis settings kind of work for the Super 32X... but only if I play Mega Drive/Genesis games. 32X games are a flickering mess no matter what I set it to, and after checking every single sampling phase individually, none of them look particularly good. I'm guessing it has something to do with the Mega Drive rendering some stuff and the Super 32X rendering other stuff.

PSP go... yeah, it's running some custom firmware that I put on it in 2012, so I'm using it for PS1 mostly.

Thanks.

I have major headaches with the PSPGo in optim mode, I have tried to convert the 240p test suite to the Eboot format to no avail. I will say that the 256x240 optim mode have sampling phase issues all over the place and I can't manage to dial in the correct settings.
Needless to say that the PSPGo have a really soft output but I'm sure it can at least be improved upon or at least I hope.
Maybe it was foolish but I even used the Pico Drive emulator to run the 240p Test Suite, but it is rendered at 525i so completely useless.

PSP has a softer image than real hardware for PS1 games; I verified this for myself when I ran Tales of Phantasia on my PSP go on my monitor and then played it on my PS2 using the actual disc. I've more or less given up on using it in optimal mode and just use generic. I did plug it into my Trinitron once and it generally works there as long as I keep away from widescreen games.

Yeah it’s clearly softer as shown in the MLiG PS1 episode, but the results they provided were captured using the framemeister. I though it would be possible tweak the sampling options to get something more close to real PS1 hardware but it seem that the 240p signal is more or less offspecs, clearly not the same as a native PS1 timing. I’m not a fan of the generic look even in 5x mode it look absolute trash so it’s a bit of a let down. And my Lacie Electon Blue is not enough to give it a CRT look so that’s it for the moment, if someone come up with something feel to comment on this thread I’ll come back if I have any update. I can PM you my profiles if interested

My monitor is not compatible with 5X anyway, so I'm not worried about that mode. 4X is the highest it supports, but the aspect ratio breaks and displays at 16:9, so 3X is the highest that is actually usable for me.

The other problem is that I am not sure if I should be using PSP, PS1, or PS1 on PSP settings for PS1 on PSP go, and it also uses software emulation to run PS1 games, so I'm not sure if that changes anything either. Generic mode looks pretty horrible. It's an annoying mess and it seems nobody knows what to do with this combination.

Ok so this is my profile made for the PSP :

480p Line2x + upsample2x
V.Active set to 360
H.Active set to 640
H.Backporch set to 95
V.Backporch set to 63

And then the profiles for the PS1 video modes :
(PSPGo set to interlaced in the XMB)

320*240
256*240
384*240
512*240

I’ll be honest generic mode look really bad at 4x and 5x, so using the optim mode is really the way to go.

But playing on real hardware (PS1/PS2) is highly recommended for the best video experience, if you have a real PS1 and a copy of a game do the comparison. The PSPGo is really soft albeit not scaled so that’s a really big mystery, I think I’m going to get a PSIO, the PSPGo is not going to make it when compared to other tape sharp RGB and Component signals

A small update for the PSPGo :

240p test suite running via a NES Emulator at the correct resolution.

Hey all,

I've been working on improving the OSSC's handling of the PSP, and OSSC 0.86 includes my changes. There's now an PSP-specific sampling mode which gets rid of the letterbox, and an optimized line2x mode (enabled automatically when you use the PSP sampling mode and enable line2x).

Okay, great... but what should be done with PS1 games on the PSP using the OSSC? Also, is there a difference in recommended settings between a 2000, 3000, go, and go on the dock?
